Luie P. Garcia on Bamby Salcedo

“SHE helped me feel proud of who I am.”

The adjectives used by storyteller Luie Garcia to describe transgender activist BAMBY SALCEDO – vivacious, fashionable, loud, fun, and fearless – reflect the dynamic leadership Salcedo provides for the trans and queer communities in Los Angeles and beyond. Growing up in Guadalajara, Mexico, Salcedo faced many obstacles born out of poverty. Overcoming substance abuse, street violence, and crime, Salcedo was found her calling as a leader of the trans-immigrant movement in America. Out front at marches, celebrations, conferences, and summits, Salcedo also works tirelessly behind the scenes on health and economic issues and has created support services for trans-identified immigrants. Her work has moved transgender rights forward at the local, state and national levels.
